The Ending Was Inevitable!
26 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
As the producers have said, this was the inevitable ending to the story.

Once Alan was resigned to his fate after trying to manipulate Sam into letting him go, he decided to proceed to his inevitable fate, not that he wasn't hoping it wouldn't result in his release.

I was pleased when he told Sam's mother that she failed to protect her son; that she didn't leave, but allowed her husband to brutalize him.

I suppose that since she created him is one of the reasons why she lets him keep killing innocent people in her twisted logic. I thought at one point Sam was going to kill her for allowing him to be abused.

I think if his dad had been drunk, living in squalor and verbally abusive, it would have triggered him enough to continue to kill him until he was dead, but he didn't.

I don't think he progressed. He's a serial killer with no conscience and would eventually kill again. Killing Alan and Alan as human-being meant nothing to him.

His feeble attempt to not kill again will be ineffective and once the mom stops feeling guilty for her inaction in his childhood, maybe she'll finally take pity on the victims who's blood is also on her hands and finally dial 911.
