Review of All Rise

All Rise (2019–2023)
7/10
OWN ownership has ruined it!

Warning: Spoilers
I re-watched season 1 to get caught up to the current season so felt like I was coming into the show fresh. But since I'd already watched it and decided I liked it before it felt strange to one episode by episode after another begin to witness it's devolution. Only to see it go completely off a cliff in season 3.

It's not just about some actors changed or gone. They've fundamentally changed 2 core characters into completely different people. Same actors. Same characters. But they AREN'T the same people.

First the less irritating. Robin, the FBI husband. The replacement is fine, we know actors move on. This guy is just as great as Robin. Plus he's gorgeous so who's gonna complain? Am'I'right ladies? Not that the previous one wasn't but...

I had actually hoped we'd gotten rid of Emily Lopez by season 3. I rooted for it. It was time for her to move on. She was my most annoying character. I know she was troubled due to her abuse, but man, she can heap that abuse OUT too. There were lots of times SHE was the abuser (verbally) then she'd take it back or apologize. That can only happen so many times before they're presenting the same abusive behavior to others.

Luke, his new PD role was expected but his appearance change didn't fit him. He came off as trying to be a suave ladies man in season 3. That's NOT who the 1-2 season Luke WAS. They could've made him more self-confident without gussying him up as if he got a city-fied make-over.

Sara Castillo is weird. Changing her job to becoming a social worker, ok, fine...I can buy that. But she doesn't act LIKE Sara who's now a social worker. She's got a different personality. Different outlooks. Different...Sara. It's as if the writers or producers said...this character shouldn't have been like this...let's have her be this but we'll give it one episode to explain why we're changing this character completely (she's just gonna have an epiphany about her job) and the audience will just have to buy it. Well...I don't. I LIKED the Sara, court reporter and buttinsky character. They should've kept Sara and just introduced a new social worker type character named...Beverly. Or whatever.

And Sharri Kansky. She actually was my favorite character. Little bit cranky. Little bit sweet. Always smart, quick-witted, sees things very clearly in a snappy way. But we went from her beginning to soften and have a boyfriend to that suddenly being over with NO explanation and now she's just back to being single (or she's seeing someone but now it's no longer important to have us even meet him?) But worst of all is she's WEIRD now. Now she has to be the buttinsky because Sara isn't there anymore. But worse is she's no longer intelligent behaving. Snappy. Quick. She feels like she's become a dullard. Again, they decided her chaacter needed to change? And I don't really care what is going on with her parents in season 3. They didn't set up ANY groundwork for this backstory. But suddenly it's happening? Bulloney.

Again, I think this is because OWN owns it now. OWN is just Lifetime Movie channel with emphasis on racial dramas instead of stalker killer christmas movies. They ruined All Rise.

But what REALLY ruined it for me? Season 3, episode 11 when Lola Carmichael became a weak woman and let some neanderthal misogynist put her in a position of having her FANTASTIC FBI hunk of a husband walk in on her kissing him. Him being her 1st serious love who's been acting like a dick all season. While he (the great husband) has been snapped at, accused of not being very caring about his wife who CHOSE to work's feelings about how he does things without HER permission. Horrible storyline. Makes me dislike Lola personally. She's being selfish. While he's actually trying to make sure everything works.

I seriously doubt I'll be coming back to watch the rest of season 3. OWN has lost me as a viewer. Because they've made some hugely bad fundamental changes to the show that I don't want to waste my time with.

Shoulda let it stay cancelled in season 2. Least then it'd go out on a high-note.
