Cry Terror! (1958)
Fantastic DESPERATE HOURS rip-off
19 December 2022
Directed by a film maker who, as Bert Gordon, always made movies with his wife. Specialist of low budget disaster films, before the seventies era and this time the huge, gigantic budget movies such as POSEIDON ADVENTURE and other TOWERING INFERNO.... Here, it is not a disaster movie but an outstanding suspense thriller, so tense, so well made in terms of directing, editing and especially acting, with an over the top Rod Steiger who can nearly make us forget Humphrey Bogart in DESPERATE HOURS. I could more or less say the same concerning another film from Andrew Stone: NIGHT HOLDS TERROR, which I usually confound with this one, a very close kind of topic and scheme - suburban American like family facing home invasion with hoodlums - with an impressive John Cassavettes instead of James Mason. James Mason here, as the family man, facing Steiger and also Neville Brand as the villain goon, of course; not the local repairman. Yes, one of the best film from the director, besides DECKS RAN RED and JULIE too. A director who deserves to be discovered again.
