Terrible trappers trigger tribal tensions
25 December 2022
Three trappers make an incursion upon Cherokee treaty land and return with a substantial haul of furs. Concerned about tribal reprisals against Boonesborough, Dan takes exception.

Season 3 finishes fairly strong with a well paced near-the-fort adventure. Dan falls into his usual park ranger\peacekeeper role, and is given a standard issue miscreant to play against. But, B-movie regular heavy John Ireland does what he can to provide some menace. Also worked in is a tribal succession drama with Michael Forrest as the aspirant. In a crisis with the Cherokee Mingo would certainly be useful, but apparently he is hunting elsewhere this week. The regular Boonesborough family baggage is appended, but an abduction of Becky and Israel allows Fess Parker to hint at what he might do with a rage-driven "Taken"-style role.

Only minor historical errata and context is encountered in this hour. Boonesborough settlement was in actuality just a colonial annexation, no record I know of that the Cherokee were asked for their approval. From 1770 to 1794 the Cherokee did clash intermittently with American settlers, then turned toward an accommodationist policy; their subsequent reward was Andrew Jackson's removal of them to Oklahoma in the 1820's. This week sees a more favorable leaning toward accuracy in the mishmash of Plains and Mid-South tribal accessories, but its largely negated when the tribesman start carrying Plains war lances - of dubious value in a woodland setting. Israel is gifted an attractive set of Revolutionary War soldiers, though they appear be before-their-time War of 1812 models, and more likely of late 19th century vintage.

Still, action is well-deployed throughout the hour, and incorporates flintlock action, a tavern brawl, and a well -choreographed single combat scene for Dan. No real denouement with Ireland's antagonist, but Season 3 of Daniel Boone finishes on a reasonably strong note.
