Culture Clash!
27 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Expected more from this director, who relied too heavily on Everest's Climbing EcoTourissts homemade videos, thus ultimately producing a film from that privileged POV. Throughout the viewing, I kept remembering a line from film: Seven Years in Tibet, "This is another difference between our civilization and yours. You admire the man who pushes his way to the top in any walk of life. While we admire the man who abandons his ego. The average Tibetan wouldnt think to thrust himself forward in this way." I suggest, neither would average Nepalese. The culture clash presents dramtic tension here, as tourists' apparent lack of humanity during a natural crisis, their poor choices, coupled with filmakers poor character choices, made this almost unwatchable.

I was joyously relieved seeing a more detailed documentary coverage of successful extraction of 15yr old Khatmandu survivor, a story which also was bested as news footage around the world.

If only this film had followed Nepalese life among villages and Khatmandu's rebuilding in following years. If only main character choices were different, if only an entirely different POV had been delivered. I wasnt capable of relating to any of the main characters. Having lived in Earthquake territory all of my life, I was beggng for something different which never came. Following such a massive shaker, there's always an abundance of dramatic and documentary subject matter for film and writers, this was a poorly chosen perspective.

Cinematic beauty in this part of the Himalayas is hard to mess up, viewers may have that to look forward to. Will this serve as a travelogue for similar wannabe ecotourists? I fear so.
