I have no problem panning a low budget movie that tries to think big, but falls flat. With this movie, they knew what they had. The special effects are done practically, and the script captures a dysfunctional group of high schoolers very well. Julie's father buys run down houses to clean up and sell, but of course is a failure doing that. Julie is forced to spend a Saturday cleaning a house, and her friends decide to help out. Her father left to do business in town (drinking beer). And showing up is Wade, a bully, a jerk and stupid and obnoxious. And none of her friends are capable of doing anything to support each other. The house is haunted with water spirits, and they are not nice at all. There is good character development, as one can believe they are as unsupportive and insensitive as they are. And the actors seem to not take their roles seriously which helps a movie like this. It is entertaining, in some ways inventive, and they got a lot for their money. Better than many low budget films filling the midnight movie shows.
