The Big Green (1995)

Worse Than I Remember

This is the same formula as any other children's sports movie of the time period. In summary: a bunch of kids without any natural ability or experience are drafted for no good reason into a sports team, the team faces off against the best team in the league, which is mean and competitive and dressed in black, the protagonists are mowed down, then they get good over the course of the movie and beat said evil team by the end.

The formula could work as it did in the bad news bears if the misfits had a strong personality and screen presence. In this one they don't. None of the children are extremely well-developed nor is any of them a particularly poignant actor. Even the kid who plays the fat funny kid archetype and featured in a lot of the advertising is quite bland, mostly just looking funny.

They try to make some drama out of having an unemployed dad and the mother of the only kid who's good at soccer is apparently wary of the immigration authorities. It's very mildly interesting and helps round out the setting as a small depressed Texas town, but the problems seem really superficial and resolved easily.

Can't recommend it. The only reason someone would want to watch this movie is to see Olivia D'Abo prance around in different outfits.

Honorable Mentions: Conan: The Destroyer (1984). At its true core, it's the same movie as The Big Green, except with medieval fantasy costumes instead of professional casual wear.
