The Great Escape Entertains
8 January 2023
I saw The Great Escape as a kid and absolutely loved it. I revisited it again recently (40 years later) and while I still enjoyed it, it was a considerably different experience. Even as a youngster I could see that they didn't really show much of the grisly, cruel, inhumane aspects of the war. As an adult I see that they didn't really show any of those aspects of the war and made the POW camp seem . . . Not so bad. In addition to having plenty of humor, it does also have moments of sadness and suspense and scenes of death, but on the whole handles those elements with a light touch and never lingers on those darker scenes. That's OK though because The Great Escape still works as a fun and highly entertaining WWII film which I still enjoyed and still recommend checking out.
