Good movie but missed a chance to tell an important story

I liked the movie, but don't understand why they didn't tell the story as it happened. The real story is better.

They changed the town from Buffalo to Antelope for some reason, but I don't understand why they wen't with Cain Hammet instead of Nate Champion for the hero. Best. Hero. Name. Ever.

Also, Nate Champion's notes during the firefight were legendary. I don't know why they chose to leave that out.

My main complaint is the fact that they implied that the bad guys faced justice. The real story is that US calvary ordered by president of United States let them all go. They were paid and rewarded.

US Senators hired a mercenary army to invade and kill American citizens and everybody went free. Money and connections. This should be taught in all US history classes.

There are a lot of good write-ups of the story online. I like the one on historynet.

Even that account leaves out the two trappers that were staying with Nate Champion that night. They were the only witnesses so they were kidnapped and taken back east and warned never to return.

Read "The Longest Rope" by William Walker if you can find it.
