Parents Of The Bride
23 January 2023
Feuding ex-spouses David and Georgia Cotton (George Clooney and Julia Roberts) rush off to Bali when their daughter decides to abandon her plan to become an attorney. These two can't stand each other, but they try to hide their animosity to present a common front, hoping to steer daughter Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) back on the path to a law career.

Clooney and Roberts can navigate the rom-com genre with their eyes shut, so it is no surprise that they fit neatly into their roles. Kaitlyn Dever is charming and likable on-screen, as is the actor who plays her love interest, Gede (Maxime Bouttier). In fact, the entire cast is enjoyable. The script is simple in the sense that there are no big surprises, no plot twists, no hidden motivations that underlie the action. This is a very straight forward story.

The course of true love never did run smooth, so the Cottons suffer a bumpy ride in (what is meant to be) Bali, but the idyllic scenic beauty is some compensation and it has an ability to sway the emotions.

The film is a pleasant diversion and probably no one will expect more than that.
