MORE DRAMA WITH THE BAD BANK ROBBERS
29 January 2023
Skip Fickling was the author behind HONEY WEST. He churned out eleven detective novels between 1957 and 1961, all about a smooth female detective for a change of pace. Reportedly, he named his character "Honey" after his wife, which he credited for helping him with ideas. He chose "West" as a last name due to the fact that he loved the west coast, himself born in Long Beach, CA. This tense episode is very much in tune with Skip's character and work, more of a noirish tale as Honey attempts to nab a ring of bank robbers, posing as a teller. Very clever.

This gets interesting and really violent (for a dark comedy type show) as the lugs methodically unlock a large bank vault, coming off more as an episode of PETER GUNN! The shootout is one to watch. A solid supporting cast with Anthony Eisley and Howard McNear (ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW) as Mr. Tweedy? McNear was hilarious and made a career out of playing retiring, befuddled gents. Look for BOWERY BOY alumnus Billy Benedict as Farley. Benedict always turned up in bits on tv for decades, so well recognized and fondly remembered. Jerry Hopper did a fine job directing here, the man behind such tv adventures as VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. One not to pass up. SEASON 1 EPISODE 16. Finally out on dvd.
