Fishbowl (2018)
1/10
Disjointed Plot and Resolution
30 January 2023
I agree that this is a combination of Virgin Suicides and Take Shelter themes but with much less plausibility and sympathy. The mother's pep was Pollyanna and overwrought in its flashbacks. The father's knee jerk or developed bitterness and distrust toward his girls was mercurial. His vulnerability was translated gullibility, but then culpability when abdicated to his young captives. The religious themes were transparent and relatable, but the demands undertaken, cultic and draconian. A person like this finishes the job, but this script hijacks the character of the protagonist, and then crash lands into an entirely different movies' ending. If this is a film to be appreciated for the raw intensity of suffering, it makes the viewer wonder why the police or the priest didn't take a harder look into this fishbowl, or why the writer either meandered to the inevitable close, or lost sight of this story's plot trajectory. This movie was a misfire, albeit with great potential for explosive and dramatically more meaningful possibilities.
