Mannix: The Girl Who Came in with the Tide (1969)
Season 2, Episode 17
10/10
LADY IN THE LAKE, MANNIX STYLE.

A very good story and rather scenic, which the series was beginning to be known for, written by producer Ben Roberts and Don Mankewicz, famous for I WANT TO LIVE (1958). Producer Ivan Goff also worked with Roberts, but not on this episode. They became a top writing team in their own right.

Here, Joe suspects that an old "frenemy" is responsible for the death of a young woman whose body washes up on a beach at Malibu. Mannix relies more on hunches here, and there's a neat twist with a written confession. However, it's not that EZ. Lots of weaves, which earns this story 10 Stars.

Imposing Lloyd Bochner plays Alec, number one suspect and a thorn in Joe's side. Bochner always best at playing sophisticated cons. Beautiful Nancy Kovack plays Brett, who would appear again on the series, a welcome addition as she could handle a variety of roles. And could she really be the one behind the murder this time?

This marks the first appearance of Robert Reed as Tobias, who would alternate with Ward Wood as top cop. The story goes, Reed was never happy playing the dad on the BRADY BUNCH, so producers offered him a side gig. However, when he eventually quit the sitcom, he was also dropped from MANNIX. Personally, I always thought Ward Wood looked more the part of a cop; it was hard for Reed to shake the Mike Brady image as many fans would note. Reed, who had naturally curly hair, even wore it straight in this show.

Partly filmed at sunsational Paradise Cove, located beneath the cliffs at Malibu. This is a public slash private beach, though popular for filming. It's the kind of place you don't want to leave, but costly to hang out there.

Worth a look, and especially for Nancy Kovack. Never to disappoint. SEASON 2 EPISODE 17 remastered CBS/Paramount dvd box set. The classic blue cover photo box edition.
