In 1992, Paul Dini created Harley Quinn, one of the best characters in Batman's rogues gallery. Two years later, he penned her origin story, and it is a great one. "Mad Love" delves further into hers and Joker's relationship, where it started and why it's not going well (Batman's fault, obviously).
Harley was once a promising young psychiatrist, excited to take on the Joker's case before soon falling for his charm; a cycle of abuse masquerading as a love affair.
This is based on an issue of the comics, and if you've never read it, do yourself a favor and track that down now. It's a tragic story that's dark, funny and supremely entertaining.
Here, it's adapted into a BTAS episode and the tale is enhanced considerably by the familiar voices. Hamill, Sorkin and Conroy are exceptional and it's a great episode overall, suitable on its own.
If there's a downside, it's that it was done after the show's redesign (that's probably just me, I do not like the simplified animation). But, grand scheme of things, that's a minor quibble. "Mad Love" is definitely one of the great episodes.
