The quintessential English film - rammed with self-destruction, paranoia, regret, melancholy, loneliness, nostalgia, betrayal and seriously funny lines. The intoxication of this film is endless, a long woozy night that never ages and never ends. I watched it first as a twenty year old student, with my own Withnail we gorged on it drunkenly and then watched it again immediately like some kind of awful Teletubbies. Until the sun rose we watched, until we were ruined by it. I utterly love this film and its terrible curse is that it's so authentically drawn that every devoted fan of it looks like a poser in comparison. So I am that, sadly.
