. . . termites. For instance, INSECT TO INJURY does NOT appear to point out that this insect is a member of the cockroach family, and has been since Jurassic Park times. Nor does INSECT stipulate that there are currently 2,972 inventoried species of living termites. These wood eaters thrive on every continent except Antarctica, where there is not very much wood to chuck. Termites are similar to Utah residents, as a colony's king and queen mate and stay monogamous for life. In Africa, termites make up more than 10% of the biomass, making them more common than hippos, rhinos, lions, elephants or giraffes. INSECT depicts worker and soldier termites with eyes, which is a goof, because the vast majority of termites are blind. These wood munching critters are the main spice used in the dishes of Venezuela, and these so-called "white ants" are called a "super organism" because the individuals think and behave as a group, like some species being studied in Star Trek. While somewhat helpful in highlighting a few true facts about termites, I think that INSECT could have made a bigger contribution to STEAM learning objectives.
