Umineko When They Cry (2007 Video Game)
10/10
The Best Piece of Mystery Fiction I've Ever Read
24 March 2023
Umineko When They Cry is probably the best mystery story I have ever read. Not only does it include dozens of brain-melting mysteries for the reader to solve, but it also has what most mystery stories lack: a heart. Every single one of the characters are interesting in their own way and are more than just dead bodies and culprits. The plot is simple and slow at first but when it finally ramps up it never stops getting better and better. The attention to detail with the dialogue and exposition in insane as well. Things mentioned briefly in Chapter 1 may be very important later on in solving the mysteries of the island. The soundtrack is perhaps the best I've ever heard and increases the tone and mood of each scene effectively. The art is good and sometimes great (it's in the anime style so nothing particularly special here) and the character designs are unique and not hard to look at. The voice acting work is also phenomenal. Everything about this story screams perfection. If you like mysteries, philosophy, can handle a slown burn and seemingly unsolvable mysteries, I seriously recommend picking this up on Steam (and downloading 07th mod to improve the visuals and to include voice acting). Umineko has changed the way I view the mystery genre forever and it deserves all the recognition it gets.
