Review of Arya

Arya (2004)

Did I watch the wrong movie because this was really bad

ARYA's problems start with its poor characters who are poorly constructed, due to which the film feels off-track right from the very beginning. In such types of films, you at least need strong and believable characters, which this film lacks. You have Arya who is framed as the good guy with zero flaws. I am not joking, he is a saint who does nothing wrong and is always the do-gooder. Even his problematic character traits are explained as love. Then you have Ajay who wants to get the girl by all means necessary. He is shown as a bully and a rich spoiled brat with a politician(read criminal) father. Then you have Geetha, the centre of attraction for those two boys. She is dumb and her character has zero nuance. All three of the characters are shown as college students but apparently, they don't know about a little thing called 'consent'.

Sukumar develops a partially interesting drama around these characters but due to the poor writing, it turns into a mess pretty quickly. The initial portions are entertaining, but once the drama gets serious, it quickly turns into an overlong tale of unnecessarily over-stretched scenes, pointless subplots and good albeit uselessly inserted musical numbers.

Also, forget about political correctness, but that's not how love blossoms and works. It's revealed that Arya has been following Geetha since the beginning and annoying her. Had all of this been passed as comedy, I would have understood because I once again reiterate that I am not looking for political correctness, but the film plays those moments as deadly serious. And yet she falls for her in the end. I think that's good because a dumb and indecisive girl like her deserves a person like that.

For me, in such types of films, entertainment is paramount. Alas! This film is neither entertaining nor interesting. I really feel sorry for the people who think this is a must-watch love story.
