Finally, a xianxia that could have been made by HBO
18 April 2023
In addition to great acting by Luo Yunxi and Bai Lu and a plot that hooks you in, I appreciate that this is a departure from the traditional xianxia in that it is much darker and more colorful at the same time. The female lead is not stupid. The male lead starts out as a psycho (but there's amazing character development). Finally, a xianxia that's not just about falling in love, but has a deeper central message: anyone can become a force for good and rise from the ashes.

While the production is not perfect and there are inconsistencies in editing, lighting etc, there are enough highlights to make up for the shortfall. Lots of scenes that could live in memes in years to come. Some of the fight scenes could easy be a superhero film. Also, compared to most Chinese TV dramas, the plot moves really quickly, with lots of details and easter eggs buried within, to the point that Chinese viewers are complaining that it feels choppy. However, I think this is a step in the right direction as the audience matures.

Overall, I would highly recommend this xianxia to those who would like to see a more serious, sophisticated take of the genre.
