One Rotten Priest
8 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Someone was really angry at the Catholic church, if the sacrilegious details of this film are any indication of the director's mental state. The film begins with a real sociopath of an adulterous priest. He's not just having a single affair but actually pretends to use his "commitment to God" to drop one lover for yet another! It isn't especially sad when he dies, for obvious reasons.

Then enter the topless self-flagellating sisterhood of nuns, and one youthful and conventionally beautiful nun...wearing make-up?...who inserts herself into every single social drama happening around her. The church gardener is seen as an asexual being, apparently, as he is allowed to walk through the bathing area as all the nuns shower in their conservative garments. To top it all off, the grand finale is a suicide inside the church at a wedding.

This isn't the best giallo I've ever seen but it's different, it has its own unique thing going on. Also, the film itself is high-quality. The Weapon, The Hour, The Motive is a solid effort to make a real movie, not just a sleazy exploitation joint. One especially creepy element is the odd crumbling villa that serves as a sort of ...hotel/restaurant...out in the country, hosts more than one affair, then closes abruptly and is shuttered because the owners suddenly die in an accident. Seriously, the creepiest death in the entire movie to me was that the owners of the restaurant die within a week or two of the main characters having a love scene there.

I thought the black kitten making it rain marbles inside the cathedral was a really nice touch, worthy of an entire star all on its own.
