A Small Light (2023)

Disappointing
9 May 2023
I like the set designs, and the actors are doing their best.

Unfortunately as a Dutch person (yes another one of those commenting with gripes, haha) I am disappointed that we are being 'Englishwashed' with british accents. It makes the one Dutch actress (Hanna van Vliet) stand out 😅

Drama has been added when there are so many opportunities in the truth for showing us as viewers what it was like for Miep and the other portrayed people. The tone is so lighthearted. The Man In The High Castle (episode 1) showed the angst and paranoia so much better. It is a real missed opportunity - there are many parallels to draw with the political realities today (fascism/extreme right politics on the rise in a lot of countries) but this show feels almost cutesy and quaint. To name one thing - if you have visited the Annex ('het Achterhuis' as Anne called it) it is tiny and claustrophobic. The rooms here look larger (though I do recognize them from my visit) and the characters are talking so loudly! Old houses here have very thin walls. So for people who are hiding to raise their voices against eachother... 😱

The one thing this show did accomplish is that I want to read Anne Frank's diary again, 27 years after I read it at age 13.
