The picture is a paean to film and nostalgia and family - how we recreate the past in our memories and how we let the story and the memories shape who we are now. We tend to narrativize our past with simple memories but they don't always tell the entire picture. This movie tries to portray that bittersweet relationship we have with our parents, the two people from whom we get our personalities and our sense of who we are and make sense of the world. And only art can often do this complex relationship justice, but the beauty in this portrayal is that it's the very scientific aspect of film that the director got from his father combined with the artistic sensibility that the director got from his mother. It's not just a biography but a meditation on how we become who we are and how we tell that story, too.
