Funny how they reference "The Naked City" logo in this.

I was thinking of that the moment. They started showing people be in shot by the unseen "Son of Sam", and when one of the detectives paraphrases the catch phrase, it reminded me how many times i've used that to describe something going on in a darkened mystery or film noir ore set in a big metropolis. Martin Sheen truly is excellent as the real life detective involved involved in the case, although the film covers more about his personal life involving his dying wife. The actual case is the cover story of more personal issues, and I didn't find it distracting or unnecessary at all, because as the catch phrase about many stories concludes, that is just one of them.

It was quite interesting to see street footage of various parts of New York City in several boroughs how it would look like in the 1970's, similar to now but obviously different with different styles of street layouts, and a great lengthy scene where Sheen must calm down a "Son of Sam" suspect who had kidnapped his daughter and later a subway passenger, held at gunpoint. Sheen as always is mesmerizing, and plays a great character with lots of dimension, a flawed but basically honest cop. The confrontation with the character of David Berkowitz in the last reel truly is chilling, no Jason or Freddy, but scarier because he really existed. Fortunately. The shootings are not graphic so viewers won't have disturbing visuals in spite of the disturbing premise. A lot of familiar actors pop in and out, but this is the elder Sheen's show, although it will be a challenge trying to find the younger one in his unbilled cameo.
