Zany and wacky close to its best

Warning: Spoilers
Among the clutter of substandard films that symbolised the 80s. This stands out as an out to out creative masterpiece. How better to speak out against the tropes than to make a movie spoofing all the bollywood tropes prevalent then. A little known movie that deserves its spot in the limelight

It features Hari Giridhara(an excellent Ravi Baswani), Giri Haridhara(Sathish Shah) as CBI detectives blackmailing Vijay(Farooque Shaikh) to spy on his father-in-law Brigadier(Amjad Khan who seems to be having the time of his life).

The deliberate lack of coherent screenplay is instead replaced by a series of gags. The film may lag a few minutes here and there- a few jokes might not land where they intend to, but the movie does not stay long enough at any particular premise to allow you to wander off. The film runs along nonchalantly as each setting leads to another set of gags that keep you in splits. Abrupt cuts followed by Jitendraesque dance moves performed by Shaikh and Roma(Roma Manik) remind us how absurd the 80s were for Hindi films. The costumes are anything but subtle - the choreography as zany as that era could get. The best though are the dialogues and pop culture references of those times. Once when Ben Kingsley is referenced as Gandhi. Amjad Khan repeating is dialogues from Sholay( 'kitne aadmi the'). Choos Lee(son of GutLee)and Enter the Dragon references. Ifthekaar as the police inspector and many more references dot the screentime.

Add to that you give an opportunity to a motley crew of brilliant character actors to work their magic including Rajendranath, Rajesh Puri, Anupam Kher and Viju Khote.

This is a genre defining movie for wacky comedies and sequences in movies like 3idiots(stealing clothes from a wedding hotel room), Boss1 being an inspiration for Crime Master Gogo(Andaz Apna Apna). Climax harakiri( a la Priyadarshan). The movie is clearly low budget, but they are unapologetic about it and that is what stands apart from many a mediocre movie content that passes off as comedy these days. A MUST watch and definite recommendation.
