Humble beginnings.
22 June 2023
It´s always fun to see the journey of an artist and Anders Matthesen is one that has had a wild journey. From humble beginnings to massive talent to what I think is a bit of a sell-out, it´s just so interesting to follow. This show was his first huge break and it´s fine. You can really feel he grew a lot with his later shows and this one has a lot of flaws and a lot of just elements for elements sake. It´s a variety show where the best elements are Anders pure stand up without characters and concepts and it makes you just want that more. Top that up with some disrespectful parts and angry rants that just feel like too personal, and you have a fine show but a messy and imperfect one.

Anders Matthesens show where he takes on different personas but also delivers a pure stand up show. Singing, sketches and stand-up all in one.

I think the pure stand-up by Anders Matthesen as himself is the best part. I would rather not have there be different characters songs and sketches as they seem like an afterthought and the weakest parts. It´s like a hiding tool to get away with different jokes and not really be the focus, a problem he himself has addressed in a later show.

The songs are funny and energetic but feels out of place. The thing that really feels out of place are the invisible friend sketch. It´s well performed but feels like such an afterthought.

There are some really poor taste jokes like the first character is a new comedian nerd that isn't funny. I feel like this is Anders commentating on new comedians but forgets he himself was there at that point being new and unfunny. Some humility would suit the show. There is also a thing about the way people dress that becomes a bit too malicious to an evil standpoint. I think the first set is better and the later becomes a bit too personal.

It´s funny this show should have been the end to the character Stewart Stardust, a character Matthesen has now milked beyond believe, even killing him off again in a future show only for him to come back once again.

I think the energy of the show is pretty good, while not everything lands, it never gets stale or boring to look at and listen too. Although it seems like jokes are forgotten here and there and there are some quite moments that last a bit too long to not seem like the next joke was forgotten. There is even a joke that never gets a resolution and is then just glossed over.

The audience is also a bit too much at times. Feeling a bit too drunk and egging on behaviour that takes on too much of the show.

This is a fine show and it keeps your entertained throughout. There is a bit something for everyone here but a pure focus on stand-up should have been done, a thing Matthesen proves he can do even in this very show. Overall an entertaining show with some highs and lows equalling out to a middling experience.
