Underrated Peek Into Artistic Genius

My Impressions:

As a fictional dramatization based on a one-of-a-kind artist, "Daliland" brought a small slice of eccentric art legend Salvador Dali's life to, well, life. The story was not entirely based on historical fact. Nonetheless, every frame felt deeply intimate and was carefully crafted.

Set in the early 70s and mid-80s, in New York and Paris, the movie captured captivating vintage elements - including a yesteryear cinematographic palette - and paired them with great performances.

I was happy to see Ben Kingsley back in character-artist form. Dali's younger version was played quite well by Ezra Miller. I also loved what the character Gala, played by Barbara Sukowa, brought to the movie. As Dali's partner, wife, and former muse, she was a complex and multi-layered person worth watching.

The story covered a point in Dali's life when he was getting old but still had great ideas. He aimed to launch an art show in New York, primarily to make money. His temporary assistant James Linton soon became a pivotal character in his own right - Christopher Briney did good work in the role.

Subtext, inter-dependence, and 'silent revenge' defined the bond between Dali and Gala. It was a treat to see their dynamics and spot the threads of humanity that connected them. I liked how cleverly these were woven into the plot.

By the end of the movie, I felt as if I'd seen one of Salvador Dali's paintings brought to life through a cinematic lens. The story was rife with meaning, tension-packed, and complex in all the right shades. Very few movies are made this way. "Daliland" become, in my personal opinion, a criminally underrated production.

Hair-makeup and costume design were amazing. Art direction and set decoration were great. Sound effects and VFX were also great. Editing was admirable. Musical scoring was noteworthy. Cinematography was outstanding. Screenplay was captivating. Direction was simple yet meaningful.
