Review of Silo

Silo (2023– )
7/10
Boring, poorly written, poorly acted show...with a really cool ending

Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to like Silo, especially considering all the positive reviews. Unfortunately each episode had me rolling my eyes at how predictable the plot was or how stupidly the characters were behaving:

Here are a few examples: 1. Juliette suspects there is a murder conspiracy. Yet she walks around freely with forbidden relics in her hand and opens them right there in her office or in her home where someone could easily barge in and see what she's up to.

2. Juliette constantly visits that secret area where the water is, never once considering that someone could be following her.

3. The hidden area has enough lighting to see the whole place and the machinery within it. Are you telling me no one in the silo notices a spike in electricity whenever she turns on all those lights?

4. The people who are sent out to clean. If they "see" that it is safe why keep cleaning? Why not give a "thumbs up", smile, do a peace sign, or any other sign to let the people know that things are fine outside? (Yes, I know things are not actually 100% fine outside but they are being shown that things are fine vs what the silo residents are being shown on their viewscreens).

5. The security in the silo is pretty amateur. You're looking for someone yet you leave the lights off and don't even search the entire room?

6. It's a silo. I'm pretty sure food must be precious. Yet at a funeral everyone takes one bite of fruit and then discards the rest of the fruit in a grave???

There are some talented actors like Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Robbins, David Oyelowo, etc. However the writing is really bad and sadly so is the acting.

Beyond the terrible accents (what's wrong with having the non-American actors speak in their native accents rather than distract everyone with their poor attempts at an American accent?) nearly every character speaks in a monotone robotic manner. I can't tell if it is bad acting or the actors were told to show zero emotion when delivering lines. Common is the biggest mistake with the casting. He cannot act. He sounds like an illiterate child most of the time and I couldn't stand his scenes.

A few positives. My favorite character is Martha Walker. The actress was quite good and I enjoyed every scene she was in. Also the show looks amazing, from the design of the silo itself to the wardrobe and sets. Also I will admit that the last few episodes were entertaining once the showrunners started answering questions and the reveal at the end does have me interested to see what happens next with the story. Hopefully season 2 will be an improvement.
