Decent Mystery Despite Another Appearance By The Annoying Joan Thursday

Warning: Spoilers
One of the reasons I really liked Season 7 of Endeavour is because Joan Thursday isn't in it. This is a character that pretty much fizzled out by Season 5 or so. Aside from easily being the most annoying and unlikable character of the series, her character also has no useful direction or purpose, especially by this point in the series. They need to just write her out altogether or find some way to remove the character. She's very selfish and immature, and she loves to believe she knows what she's doing when she hasn't a clue. In short, she never grows up or evolves. The bank heist was a perfect example of this where she should have ended up in jail for her indiscretions. As a person who has worked in the banking industry, I know what can happen if you divulge security protocols.

Morse is put on the case of a murdered taxi driver, and how it connects with an underground blue film company. The ending is another whopper, especially when the connection is revealed.

Morse is also put out by his overbearing stepmother who shows up unexpectedly on his doorstep to stay with him. It's obvious that he's not at all enamored with her, and given her character with her constant criticisms, who could blame him? I kept waiting--and hoping--he might throw her out on her ear.

We also find that Morse seems more worn down with each episode of this 8th season. He's also grown much more cynical in his approach to his job, and one has to wonder when he might turn the corner to eventually become the character we all know and love from the "Inspector Morse" series. But after the events of the past two seasons, we can see how that would easily take its toll on anyone and why Morse almost prefers to be alone rather than with someone. His horrible luck with women--often because he chooses the wrong ones--seems to be a big part of his increasingly cynical attitude.

All in all, this is a solid entry into what's--so far--been a good 8th season. I will say that the first four seasons or so of this show are. By far, the best.
