An Old Lady (2019)
5/10
Could have been so much more...
22 July 2023
When I sat down to watch the 2019 South Korean crime drama "69 se" (aka "An Old Lady") here in 2023, I had actually never heard about the movie prior to watching it. I wasn't really sure what I was getting into here, but it being an Asian movie that I hadn't already seen was sufficient for me to take an interest in it.

Writer and director Sun-Ae Lim put together a script that actually did have something important to tell and at heart, as the movie deals with ageism and sexual assault. However, the pacing of the narrative is slow, so very, very slow. And I have to admit that there wasn't exactly a whole lot of interesting stuff happening throughout the monotonous narrative, and that made sitting through "69 se" somewhat of a struggle.

Leading actress Soo-Jung Ye really carried the movie quite well with her performance. And I have to say that I am impressed with her acting talent.

"69 se" certainly is something you should watch, given the contents of the script, but bear in mind that the narrative is incredibly slow paced. And as such, I don't think that writer and director Sun-Ae Lim's 2019 movie is one that will easily cater to everyone in the audience.

My rating of "69 se" lands on a bland five out of ten stars. The pacing of the narrative simply held back the movie for me. A shame, because this movie could have been so much more, and a much more hard-hitting viewing experience, if only writer and director Sun-Ae Lim had opted for a more compelling and more interesting narrative.
