Review of Babylon

Babylon (I) (2022)
5/10
Far too long.
1 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Like a number of other reviewers have stated, this film is at least an hour too long. The party at the start seems to go on for weeks. Then the scene where Margot Robbie, who is probably the best thing in it, has to take a scene over eight times before it's right, not for her want of trying. Okay I understand that's true of the movie business but it could have been portrayed in a fraction of the time.

The Gangster part, featuring a barely recognizable Toby McGuire, was completely pointless. There many more pointless scenes, the snake incident another one.

Why did Nellie suddenly disappear? As she was wandering off into the distance I was expecting a shot from a gun, is that what happened, did I miss it? The only explanation we got was a faded byline in a newspaper to brief on screen for us to read, that she died aged 38 but not how.

I'm very rarely influenced by who directed a film, save for Stanley Kubrick or Spielberg so I didn't know it was directed by the same guy who did Whiplash that I really enjoyed, or La La Land which I didn't, I think the later is more of the same as this one.

It was worth watching for Margo Robbie who was sensational, so glad she escaped from Neighbours where she was wasted. Having said that I have no intention of watching Barbie!!!

Five stars for her and Brad.
