A fire in a stable to start the episode. That's a new one, I think.

David Eigenberg absolutely steals the show with his portrayal of Hermann going through the ups and downs - mostly downs, it has to be said - of wife Cindy's battle with cancer. This storyline, as I've written previously, has really allowed Eigenberg to shine, taking centre stage when he is so often kind of in the background. With Jesse Spencer gone and Taylor Kinney off the show for an undetermined period of time, the rest of the cast have needed to step into the breach. Consider that mission accomplished for Eigenberg.

The Gallo-Violet situation is resolved, and I didn't see the Carver/Lieutenant Seeger pairing coming, that's for sure. Elsewhere, mandated cuts to non-fire fighting budget areas have caused some drama in the firehouse. Mouch's disbelieving looks each time he discovers that something else has been taken away from him is priceless. A much-needed light and funny storyline in what was quite a heavy episode. Chicago Fire has always been good at balancing the serious with the light, and succeeds again this episode.

But, really, this episode is all about David Eigenberg. Stunning acting.
