Warning: Spoilers
Maybe I had better experiences in watching George Formby movies prior to this, or they were better movies. But I barely grimaced at the British Adam Sandler of the 40's (replacing Joe Penner, the Joe Penner of the 30's), here becoming a surprise hero as he takes on German spies (who happen to have British accents) after being escorted by the military police who discover that he's late for an appointment to enlist. Someone should warn the too admiral that he's coming because he's completely incompetent, the type that would try to sleep on a submarine with the windows open.

Squeaky voiced, gap and buck toothed Formby (a rather redundant statement because all of the male characters have squeaky voices) sings a bunch of inconsiqiential ditties, not letting anyone else sing, and after a while, it's all too much. There are some slapstick moments that had I been around when this first came out I could have chortled over, but as much as I love classic comedy (including a lot of British), this is painfully dated, with a ton of material that could easily be cut. Giving this a more generous rating than it probably deserves, simply because of its propaganda patriotism and good nature.
