Mastaney (2023)
6/10
Overall a good effort, but left me wanting more

Warning: Spoilers
Mastaney's trailer got me very excited. I expected a colorful movie detailing the events of Panjab during the time. Instead the movie briefly touches history with a couple one-liners here and there and focuses on a love story and the magical transformation of 5 ordinary men into warriors with 1 recitation of Sikh prayer. I am not downplaying the psychological strength of prayer, but no significant training scenes are depicted and no significant historical backdrop is depicted.

The film falsely uses the guise of history to sell a love narrative between a slave-girl and a drunkard. The film had so much potential, and it could have been like "Troy" or "300". It could have at least been like "The Black Prince". I felt like I wasted by money and time during the movie.

I do commend the team on the graphics and superb music. Music score was amazing. Costumes were good too. The story could have been more historical, like film "Sajjan Singh Rangroot", which managed to balance historical story telling while also creating a drama. I also commend the team for making the production in multiple Indian languages, something which needs to be done more. Also, the use of Farsi in the film's opening sequences was brilliant.

Overall a good effort, but left me wanting more. I support Panjabi movies like this, but they need to step up their game. Aspire to rival Bollywood and Hollywood, do not succumb to them.
