A more factual and gritty version of the Antarctic tragedy of 1912
5 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A brilliant telling of a very well-known true-life tragedy. One of biggest stories of the early 20th century, involving powerful individuals, institutions, within the maritime nations of Britain and Norway, engaged in a titanic struggle to be the first to reach the south pole. The North Pole had already been reached by American explorers; Robert Peary and Matthew Henson in 1909.

Thus leaving the South Pole yet to be reached.

As two previous expeditions had narrowly failed, involving Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton. Powerful rivalries were at play.

Martin Shaw leads a powerful cast, featuring Max von Sydow.

This 7-part made-for-tv series, is definitely a revealing and gritty alternative, to the somewhat saccharine, telling of this story in the film; Scott of the Antarctic, starring John Mills.
