Canceled (2023)
2/10
Underwhelming snore-fest
10 September 2023
I managed to miss Joakim Lundells last movie while it aired, and after seeing Cancelled, I'm glad I did.

This abomination of a "movie" lacks in pretty much every aspect it could. The plot is uninspired and dull, which makes the ending very easy to foresee. The acting is half-assed, forced and manages to feel childish at times. We won't see these actors go anywhere big anytime soon, hopefully never. But is it even their fault? The script was doomed from the beginning.

It's really just a rehash of common horror characteristics and tropes, this movie adds nothing to a genre already clad in poor attempts at making the viewer nostalgic to better films.

The ending doesn't make sense either, I'm not going to mention any spoilers, but it feels like the writers had a case of writers block, and it shows.

Is it scary though? A poorly written horror flick can be saved by good atmosphere and well made jumpscares. Cancelled has neither. It's campy as all hell, without trying to be. The setting, an old abandoned mansion in the middle of nowhere looks like a studio. Everything looks "broken down and creepy" in a planned way, old children's toys can never cover up that a movie just isn't scary. Regarding the jumpscares, they're bad, and very easy to call out well before they happen.

I could sit here for an hour mentioning logical fallacies in the film, but that does not really serve a purpose. It's a cheap attempt and a scary film, and it fails miserably.

Are there any positives? Eh, the sound design is fine, and most of the camera work is well done. But overall, this film is lacking.

Better luck next time Joakim.
