The Undead (1957)
3/10
Ingmar Bergman on Valium
20 September 2023
I laugh every time when I see this film it is so ludicrously bad. The acting is appalling. It is as bad as Ingmar Bergman on Valium and I was reminded of ' The Virgin Spring ' and that exercise in intellectual horror, ' The Seventh Seal. ' A prostitute goes back in time which happens to be the so-called Middle Ages. Witches are killed, and the prostitute ( of course she has to be that !!! ) is involved in all this. An appearance of the devil all adds to this pot boiling nonsense. I have also noticed to my utter dismay that the film had clearly been banned in the UK and was not released until many years later with an X certificate. I am not sure what to be dismayed by most - the absurdity of the film or 1950's censorship. Roger Corman directed and in my opinion it is one of his worst films, but given it is Corman he deserves a 3 for succeeding in making a truly dreadful, and pathetically ' serious ' horror film.
