The Guide (1965)

The Guide- A movie which was well ahead of its time
30 September 2023
I had seen The Guide way back in 1965 when it was released and I was just 8 years old. Subsequently I saw it 10 years back on YouTube. However I watched the re-mastered and restored version about a week back. The visuals, editing. Dialogue, music, songs were mesmerizing. Dev Anand as an actor was never better either before this movie or later. It was Vijay Anand's direction and screenplay was world-class and to be frank better than the novel which was written by R. K. Narayan who was not too pleased with either the English or the Hindi version. Kishore Sahu as the husband of Rosie Leela Chitnis as Raju's mother Jagirdar as the villager Anwar Hussain as Raju's friend all were excellent. Waheeda Rehman is splendid first as a frustrated wife who leans on Raju , The Guide for solace then as a lover then as a successful performer who condones Raju's crime but still loves him on knowing about the sacrifices made by him to give hopes to the villagers. So many emotions but always spot on with her expressions. Her snake dance to overcome her frustrations, her celebration of being free from her husband's clutches in Aaj phir jeene ki Tamanna hai to her lovely dance in Piya tose naina large re to Saiyaan Beimaan showing contempt for Dev's crime, all dances reflect great dignity expression beauty and class. Waheeda and Dev Anand light up the screen with their tremendous performances. The Guide is a timeless classic and will be remembered for a long long time.
