Review of Mummies

Mummies (2023)
6/10
A nice and fun Spanish animated film set in ancient Egypt
22 October 2023
The movie begins a long, long time ago in the secret city of mummies, whose protagonist Thut is dedicated to signing autographs from 5 to 7. Thut was previously a great charioteer but he died due to the evil arts of some racing opponents and he was forced to become a mummy. Nowadays he lives as a simple mummy, however, his peaceful world falls apart when the phoenix bird marks him as the husband of Princess Nefer, who is as little interested in marriage as Thut himself. As if that weren't enough trouble, an ambitious archaeologist, Lord Carnaby, is about to discover the secret underground world of mummies and things get worse when he finds the Egyptian wedding ring. Then, by order of the pharaoh, Princess Nefer must marry Thut, the former charioteer. No one wants marriage; Nefer because he craves freedom, and Thut because he is allergic to marriage. But the designs of the gods are irrevocable: Thut must marry Nefer and guard the royal ring that the Pharaoh has given him. Thut must go to the human world to retrieve it. He is accompanied by Sekhem, his 12-year-old brother, with his pet crocodile, and Nefer. Together they will live a great adventure in modern London and discover something that was not in their plans: falling in love. Eventually a romance emerges with the typical repulsion-attraction. Discover a new world !.

Adventures, humor, fantasy and action in this 3D cartoon film, this is a blockbuster movie that younger people will like. There is continuous non-stop entertainment with frenetic action, good staging and adventures of all kinds in which our three protagonists: Thut, his younger brother, the princess and a pet crocodile find themselves immersed in present-day London with the consequent risks that a modern metropolis that this represents. He film is technically acceptable with a colorful pop approach accentuated by contrasts of time and space. The story, with basic positive messages, action enough and continous amusement, but it does not stand out for its inventiveness in humor, originality or the keys it handles. As the director Jesús Garcia Galocha himself explains, "Momias" takes us on an adventure where love prevails over everything else, although everything else is equally exciting. Here we have the parallel worlds, the chance of destiny, a love story, a lot of characters out of context with anachronisms, the valuable object as a macguffin, the rebellion of the teenager who wants to make her decisions, the overcoming of traumas of the apparently brave and determined hero.

There's a good and lively musical score by the presitigious Fernando Velazquez, adding some catching songs, such as: ¨Na Vandaag¨ performed by Stefania and ¨Walk Like an Egyptian¨ performed by The Bangles and Nickleback. The film was well directed by Juan Jesús Garcia Galocha, although it has some boring moments. Galocha was the creative director of the first two installments of ¨Tadeo Jones¨ and made the acclaimed animated short ¨Cuerdas¨. Rating: 6/10. A film especially aimed at little ones and lovers of animated action.
