Penultimate episode leading to epic finale

Warning: Spoilers
Man, this was a complicated episode. It starts off so lovely, with Stede and Ed just enjoying each other in the afterglow of their night together. Ed even decides to throw his leathers overboard and change into Buttons' old clothes, to finally realize he is meant to be Ed, not Blackbeard.

But then...the gang leave the ship to go to the Republic of Pirates. And to Jackie's.

No one feels safe, but Jackie welcomes them with open arms after it's discovered that Stede killed the notorious Ned Lowe (the torturer from Ep 6). He and the gang get a hero's welcome.

Ed begins to realize that Stede's star is on the rise, and that he's loving the notoriety. Stede admired Blackbeard and wanted to be more like him. Ed admired Stede's genteelness, and wanted to be more like him. Now they are finally together, but at odds. Ed is ready to leave piracy and carve out a quiet life for he and Stede. But Stede is basking in the glory of his adventures.

It all comes to a head when Ed blurts out that their night together was a mistake and that he's leaving to become a fisherman. Stede is hurt and shocked, but let's Ed go.

I personally think this is because Stede knows they are meant to be together and that they'll reunite. It's why he let's him go for now.
