Kingdom (2019)
8/10
Plenty of action
5 November 2023
KINGDOM is the first in a trilogy of manga adaptations that offer us a Japanese slant on China's 'warring states' era. The film features both the star and director of ALICE IN BORDERLAND, a show whose both seasons I've enjoyed, so it was a pleasure to see them teaming up again for a very different beast. Although the running time is two and a quarter hours, this packs plenty of swordplay and inventive action into its running time, with pleasing fantasy elements and a story told on a grand scale. The cast are well chosen and the plot carefully balances smaller and larger events. There's a lot of cliche along the way, but when it has this much energy that doesn't matter.
