Ben and Kate (2012–2013)
7/10
The pale comedy that Lucy Punch saves
4 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Approximately a series from one season can be divided into three parts. We have 16 episodes. The first five are interesting, addictive, you look at the middle, because it's interesting what other situations the characters will get into. On the fifteenth episode, I began to ask myself questions: "What's going on anyway? Why is it so sick of what is happening?". The last episode came out stretched and disgusting. I would like to say that fortunately this "masterpiece" has been completed. After episode 10, the series turns pale, he can't figure out what to make you laugh, what else to show.

Everyone will highlight their own criteria for a comedy series for themselves - give Voronins to someone, and someone enjoys British TV series with their unsurpassed humor. It's like they put a piece of projects like the movie "Dumb and Dumber", the TV series "The class", something from the movie "Bad Teacher".

The series should make you laugh, sad if the characters get into trouble, but here I want to say that most of the characters seem to have settings and follow a "set path", creating a stuffy atmosphere.

It's a good idea, it's interesting to watch the relationship between Kate, her daughter, her brother, and their friends. This idea is always new, because you get tired of always seeing the usual TV series with the family mom-dad-kids-grandparents.

An undoubted plus for the presence of tolerant lines in the show. Towards the second part of the series, BJ flirts with Kate, and Kate acts like she doesn't understand. And throughout the series, Kate can't figure out who she needs, because one man or another runs away after spending time with her bad brother and friends. Kate sometimes behaves like a child, no better than her daughter, then like a suffocator. Tommy lives in this show like a cardboard box or a robot. Maddy is the daughter of the main character. A sweet and wonderful child, but it was as if she was forced to work from under a stick: when adult actors interact with a girl, she is often inhibited and bored, does not add dynamics. Ben is a specific character, like his actor, a synthesis of Jim Carrey and other comedians. Only here the hero does not make faces, but simply creates problems for his sister with a calm soul, and at the end of the series everyone is joyful and happy.

There are interesting secondary characters, such as Nan (Leslie Grossman), Lila (Brittany Snow). The character Nan (Leslie) for one episode, she was wonderful. Lila was not revealed, it was as if they wanted to throw her away, pushing Tommy forward. Lila did not want to be included in this Squad.

In the end, I wanted to pray that Buddy (the under-aged BJ) would disappear, he was very annoying with his moronic and stupid behavior, even I turned away from the screen when he started his tricks with something in his mouth... Since then, in general, the viewer should sympathize with this, as well as the cringe situations when a sister cannot defend the right to a quiet life without the shocks that her brother creates.

I'm not going to lie. For whom it's worth watching the series, it's Lucy Punch (BJ). Take away even all the others, she will cope and the series will be better. Her tackles of Kate add spice to the overall picture. The way she gives lectures and interacts with Maddie, telling the little girl how to make up, how to behave with the servants, and other things that do not correspond to the girl's age, makes you smile (do not forget about the gorgeous episode where they were preparing to shoot an advertisement.) She is alive because she can be sincere and selfless towards her friends, combining this with her pace of life, idiocy and flighty. It's a pity that such a heroine was put first to Buddy, then to Ben, who clearly do not fit into her life, and this clearly does not suit her. To hell with 50 shades of grey, I want to know what happens if you take BJ (Lucy) and Kate (Dakota) and destroy their friend zone.
