Let's Make a 30's Murder Mystery
8 December 2023
Let's make a 1933 murder mystery. All we need is a large estate, some secret passageways if we can, and a lot of suspicious acting/looking guests.

"Secret of the Blue Room" took place in a castle. This castle had a moat and everything. The "Blue Room" was a room in Robert von Helldorf's estate in which three mysterious deaths occurred years prior. The three deaths that happened in the Blue Room all occurred at one o'clock A. M. Because of that the Blue Room had been locked and ignored until Irene von Helldorf's birthday.

Irene (Gloria Stuart) had a small birthday party that was oddly attended by only men. Apparently, Irene didn't have any girlfriends. The four men in attendance were her father Robert (Lionel Atwill), Capt. Walter Brink (Paul Lukas), Frank Faber (Onslow Stevens), and Thomas 'Tommy' Bradt (William Janney). Irene had just turned twenty-one and, as you can imagine, all of the men there loved her. It was a constant with 1930's movies. There was always one beautiful woman surrounded by many men (see "She Done Him Wrong," "Strange Interlude," and others).

Tommy proposed to Irene but was rejected. He tried to increase his chances with her by volunteering to stay in the Blue Room. He also challenged the other two suitors to stay in the Blue Room as well. He added that no matter what happened to the fellow before, the next fellow should stay in the Blue Room.

After night one, Tommy came up missing. After night two, Frank was inexplicably killed. Night three was Walter's turn, but he wasn't staying in that room without a plan.

SotBR was a decent murder mystery but failed to truly distinguish itself. Like many of them back then it was a little Scooby-Doo-ish.
