Odissea (1968)

Unparallelled masterpiece
9 December 2023
Like many of the reviewers here, I saw this as a child on German television, even though I'm Dutch and it made an unforgettable impression on me, I dreamed about it and was smitten of course by Irene Papas.

Bekim Fehmiu as Ulyssis is fantastic and complely convincing as the hero and yes, it is slow, very basic special effects, but it is magical all the same.

The story of Homer is closely followed, though for budgetary reasons they did not film the Scylla & Charibdes story and were forced to limit Ulyssis fleet from the original 12 to just one, but it does not detract at all.

But I loved the mystery, the gods, it was all so magical and felt like I transported into the past.

You can now watch it on youtube in Italian without subtitles but also a French version with English subtitles. Go to the channel of Francheval and you can find it.

I looked for a dvd for more than 20 years and when I finally found it, in original Italian without subtitles and I don't speak nor understand the least bit of that beautiful language, I had some luck it also included a German version that I could follow.

I remember putting it on for the first time after more than two decades and I hear the opening musical thema and the hairs on my arm immediately stand on end and it all comes flooding back to me, the memories.

There's few works of art that give me such a strong reaction.

This masterpiece should be restored, audio remastered and finally receive its due on a world scale that it deserves.

If I had the money I would pay for it myself.
