I believe it was mentioned at the very beginning that the movie was set in 1918. Take a look at the scenery and automobiles.
I always considered noir to be mid 1940's through mid 1950's. So maybe this would be considered a melodrama if it takes place in 1918.
The movie deals with mental illness and can be very intense. The acting is top notch and worthy of 10 stars but I thought the movie overall was a bit uneven at times.
Having pictures scattered around of Ida Lupino's late husband were photos of William Talman which was a nice touch. I thought the ending was a bit rushed but overall the acting from Lupino and Ryan was great.
