A great beginning but not sustainable

Warning: Spoilers
I reviewed this series elsewhere after an impressive first season. After the 3rd now, I am revising my opinion. The character of Saverio started out as an ambitious but reasonable person whose goals were in line with the others of the anti-mafia squad. However, by mid-season 2, we see an unpleasant and single-minded personality evolving who sacrifices his family and his colleagues in the process of trying to be 'The One' to catch all the bad guys, no matter what. Although based on real events and some real people, I sure hope 'Saverio' is only a fictional invention. I also found the new young female colleague who joins the group in season 3 to be quite improbable as both an actress and the character. It became almost like a soap opera at times and I miss the calming presence of Saverio's first boss and eventual mentor who retires. The landscape shots show a stark and yet beautiful side of the island of Sicily not seen since Montalbano, another very good series about the mafia's influence there and the dedicated professionals who track them down. The writing is pretty solid but the subtitles left a lot of confusion as they were not the best. It helps to know a bit of Italian, especially as the translated pronouns were a complete mess. The acting was uniformly good except for the young female 'prosecutor' who was not believable and the creepy assassin turned religious fanatic who had some sort of cultish power over good-looking young men. Not a bad series overall but it could and should have lasted only 2 seasons. The 3rd one just felt lame.
