Review of Echo

Echo (2023–2024)
7/10
First MCU entry harder than PG-13

NOTE: if you haven't seen Hawkeye, you will be confused.

Echo is rated TV-MA. For someone like me who hates any kind of limitations/restrictions on movies/shows, that rating alone had me excited. And speaking strictly about the violence... yes, awesome, more. Some of the scenes are brutal. Showing headshots makes it feel more real and less like a fantasy world where everything will be okay.

As for the show itself, I adore the first episode. It does a great job of setting up the story with nonlinear storytelling, jumping back and forth from before and after the events of Hawkeye. And it has one of the best fight scenes in the entire MCU. I was ecstatic.

Now with even higher expectations, the remaining four episodes left me a bit disappointed. They're still very enjoyable. But rather than this being an elite new entry in the MCU, it feels more like a bottom half of the MCU entry. And there are surprisingly few fight scenes, none coming close to the one from the first episode.

Maya is a beast of a character. As usual they do a great job of introducing a bunch of new characters you become attached to. And every second of Fisk screen time is gold.
