This review is really a reminder to self if I ever consider watching this film again. I have recorded a lot of Doris Day films and this apparently was her first. In an interview on TCM, she talks about this beautiful song they scripted for her to sing: It's Magic.
So this movie is about a woman who thinks her husband's cheating on her. She's been trying to schedule an anniversary vacation ever since they were wed, but he keeps having excuses - something always comes up at work. When he hires a new, sexy secretary, the wife suspects something's up, so she schedules a vacation (cruise) and when he tells her to cancel b/c of something at work, she decides to keep the vacation, and let's Doris go on it, so she can stay back and spy on her husband.
Only he now suspects something, because she's making excuses about why she doesn't want him to go with her.
On the cruise, Doris has to act like her. She meets a guy who's supposed to be investigating her, only it's not her, so yeah, you can see how this story is a bit crazy. I'd call it a screwball comedy RomCom, but I'm not sure what it is.
The story is OK, but I like it better later when things start to come together. And when Doris sings It's Magic, the little hairs on the back of my neck stood up. I see what she means, because the song is gorgeous, she's gorgeous, and if for no other reason, I'll watch this movie again for that scene. Show stopper.
She did pretty good for her first performance. I wish there were less singing and I also wish the story wasn't so crazy. It felt a bit disconnected, but it's ok.
Recommendation: If I'm flipping through channels and this happens to be on, sure, I'll watch again. But there's definitely better films and I'd prefer something else she's done. I wasn't a big fan of glass bottom boat, but I might watch that before this. I'm about to watch On Moonlight Bay again and I have others of hers I've yet to see, like Calamity Jane, My Dream is Yours and more, so it may be awhile until I watch this again.
