Oh So Dumb

Warning: Spoilers
I chose to watch this movie for Marion Davies. I liked her so much in "The Bachelor Father" I wanted to see what she could do in another movie.

What a mistake.

What a total waste of time and brain cells.

I know the synopsis of the movie says that Dulcy Parker (Marion Davies) made a series of seemingly dumb moves in order to help her fiance Gordy (Elliott Nugent) land a merger that wound up working, but I didn't stick around to find out. Dulcy was such a moron and such a chatterbox I couldn't bear it any longer. And if her mixing up idioms wasn't enough she had to throw in there a racist expression; something about "I just knew there was a *racist word* in the woodpile when I couldn't find him."

What the hell does that even mean?

Well, I looked it up and it turns out that such an expression was actually used!! A *racist term used for Black people* in the woodpile indicated that something was suspicious or fishy.

Now, that filthy low saying wasn't enough to make me dislike the movie, it only helped seal the deal. It was already sputtering along before that point, and I continued watching a little while longer. I stopped when ditzy Dulcy tried to help two people elope right under the nose of the girl's father.

Just to rewind a bit, Gordy was hosting a man named Charles Rogers Forbes (William Holden) in order to facilitate a merger between the two men's companies. The two made, or just sold, fine jewelry. Forbes traveled out to California from New York to meet Gordy and his fiance.

Gordy left the event planning to his fiance who could be classified as a dunce. She invited an avid golf player to their gathering because he owned several businesses. This guy proceeded to sexually assault Forbes's wife. I know back then it was just an innocent slap on the ass and from what it seemed she didn't mind it at all, but nowadays we treat such behavior more seriously.

Dulcy also invited a screenwriter because Forbes's daughter was in love with him. Besides taking up precious movie time with his telling of a script he wrote, Dulcy helped him and Forbes's daughter sneak out to elope. It was a foolish display. The two snuck out from a party to go elope like children sneaking to steal candy.

The party Dulcy threw lasted all night and into the morning and Forbes, the potential merger partner, patiently sat through the entire confounded thing though he clearly was miserable. Well, I was miserable too so I turned it off.
