Cobweb (2023)
9/10
My favorite horror film from last year!
13 February 2024
Cobweb is a 2023 horror film directed by Samuel Bodin (Lazy Company, T. A. N. K, and Marianne) in his directorial debut. It was written by Chris Thomas Devlin (Texas Chainsaw Massacre). It was produced by actor Seth Rogen (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, The Boys, Preacher, Good Boys, Blockers, The Night Before, This is the End, Funny People, Pineapple Express, Superbad, Knocked Up, and The 40 Year Old Virgin). It grossed $7.4 million at the box office!!!!

Peter (played by: Woody Norman from The Last Voyage of the Demeter and The War of the Worlds) is a shy, bullied eight-year-old boy living with his overbearing yet emotionally distant parents, Carol (played by: Lizzy Caplan from Cloverfield, Castle Rock, The Night Before, and Hot Tub Time Machine) and Mark (played by: Antony Starr from The Boys, The Covenent, American Gothic, and Banshee). He earns sympathy from his substitute teacher Ms. Devine (played by: Cleopatra Coleman from Infinity Pool, Fear Clinic, and Dopesick). Despite having plans to go trick-or-treating on Halloween night, his parents forbid him due to the disappearance of a young girl several years ago.

Later that night, Peter is woken to the sound of tapping outside his bedroom window. His parents deny these occurrences, insisting that he is imagining them. Over the next few days, Peter talks with a voice named Sarah (played by: stunt woman Aleksandra Dragova from Memory, Expend4bles, and The Offering). She claims that she was trapped in the walls by Peter's parents and calls them "evil". Ms. Devine becomes concerned after seeing a picture Peter draws of Sarah, and Carol admonishes Peter for bringing his delusions to his teacher. At school, Brian (played by: Luke Busey from Bunk'd) is a bully that destroys Peter's prize pumpkin. Spurred by Sarah's advice, Peter pushes Brian down the stairs which breaks his leg. After learning he has been expelled, Peter's parents lock him in the basement, where he discovers a pit covered with a grate. Ms. Devine becomes even more worried about the young boy. Something isn't right at Peter's house, tension builds up and strange things keep happening. Someone is lying about the past but the mystery remains who. Is he just delusional? Or Is he trapped in his own personal hell with his messed up family????

Cobweb might be the biggest surprise of the year for me. I wasn't really expecting much with this one but it ended up blowing me away. This is my current favorite and highest rated horror film for the year. It's crazy Cobweb got buried in theaters and removed from it so quickly during it's release. I actually tried seeing it but it vanished before I could check it out originally. This one kinda had a People Under the Stairs vibe to me especially the parent characters. Both Lizzy Caplan and Anthony Starr killed it here. This might be both of their best performances in their careers and that's saying a lot. It has solid performances by Woody Norman and Cleopatra Coleman here. The Sarah character is very creepy in Cobweb.

This had an impressive script that was loaded with suspense, twists, and thrills. Cobweb delivers a great build up to a satisfying finale. It has excellent production design, cinematography, music, and the special fx are on point here. I really hope this horror feature gets more attention on home video because it's one of the best in the sub-genre in a long time. It's flew under the radar and I feel like most people don't even know about it. This is definitely making my top 10 for the year. Add this movie to your collection, it should be included in every horror marathon for the month of October. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
