Unwelcome is a 2023 folk horror film written and directed by Jon Wright (Tormented, Grabbers, and Robot Overlords). It was co-written by Mark Stay (Robot Overlords). It grossed $392,846 worldwide at the box office. Warner Bro Pictures handled the distribution for this in Ireland and the United Kingdom. The great folks at Well Go USA handled the distribution and home video releases in the states. Young couple Jamie (played by: Douglas Booth from The Dirt) and Maya (played by: Hannah John-Kamen from Ant-Man and the Wasp) live together in London. After finding out that Maya is pregnant, Jamie celebrates with her only for them to be attacked by some local thugs.

Maya is left unharmed. In the aftermath of the assault, Jamie and Maya take the opportunity to move far away to a new home in rural Ireland, inherited from Jamie's great-aunt Maeve (played by: Niamh Cusack from Hereafter) after her death. The house requires some work, prompting them to hire the local Whelan family (played by: Colm Meaney from Con Air, played by: Kristian Nairn from Game of Thrones, and played by: Chris Walley from 1917) as builders. They are troubled by a warning that they should leave an offering of liver at a door of the house's back garden every night for the Red Caps that live in the forest, but accept it as a harmless superstition. Weird things start happening around the couple and their new home. The Whelans prove themselves to be violent and disturbed as time goes on. Jamie and Maya are forced to face both real life monsters and monsters in human form as their new journey slowly turns into a living nightmare!!!!

Unwelcome was a huge surprise to me, I didn't know what to expect with this one but it was much better than I thought it would be. Unwelcome provides some tense moments and suspense with a nice mix of creature horror. The script had some nice thrills and twists to it, I can see why it attracted so many familiar faces when it came to the cast. This Irish horror feature has some great performances that really elevate the overall production.

Everything about Unwelcome has a high quality to it which includes special fx, production design, locations, cinematography, music, and etc. It's nice to see someone put together a creature flick for the horror sub-genre because honestly you don't see too many of those made these days unlike the 80s when they were pumping them out. Unwelcome is one of the better horror features of the year, you need to check this one out. RECOMMENDED!!!!
